When you are an ambitious person you feel like you fail often, have you ever wondered why? Believe it or not, goals can give you a hard time when things don’t go the way you planned.
Although many people may not accept it, we live in a world that reinforces this feeling. Whether you like it or not, we all equate material possessions with success.
A study by Strayer University found that 90% of Americans believe that happiness is the greatest indicator of success, (more than power or prestige itself).
Delving further into the subject, 67% defined success as having a good relationship with friends and family, while 60% said that it is loving what one does. Only 20% assured that monetary wealth is what determines success.
When it comes to success, our eyes often lead us astray, as it’s hard to think that those with the biggest houses, the most luxurious cars, and the most influential friends are not the most successful.
Regardless of what you achieve, there will always be someone with more and this will make you feel like you are losing. Remember:
“The problem is not your lack of toys, it is to believe that these indicate what success really is.”
If you ever worry about not being successful enough, maybe you are not evaluating the correct characteristics. Sometimes you just need a reminder of all that you have accomplished. These are the indicators:
1. You are no longer the center of the universe
We all know successful people who act as if they are the center of everything, since, (according to them) it is their world and the rest of us live in it. That is not success .
Success requires empathy, realizing that the feelings and dreams of others are just as important as ours.
2. You stay positive
Hope and optimism are essential components of a happy life. If you get stuck on things that have gone wrong, you will become bitter and resentful. When that happens you will fail, no matter what you have accomplished.
Real success always means looking on the bright side and believing that you have the power to make the worst of situations that much better.
3. You know that failure is not forever
You have learned that the only people who never fail are those who don’t try. If you fail, you do not automatically think that you are a loser, on the contrary, you see these as an opportunity to learn.
Your mistakes pave the way to success and it is that frustration that you feel that forces you to see things in a different way.
4. You keep things in perspective
Bad things happen. It’s part of life. But always keep in mind that for many, our worst days seem like vacations for those who really have problems, such as not having to eat, or trying to survive a Civil war.
Leaving the keys in the car, or not being promoted doesn’t sound so bad if you look at it from another perspective. If you handle this skill perfectly, you already have great success on your side.
5. You ask for help when you need it
Not wanting to ask for help, no matter what position you are in, is a sign of emotional immaturity.
Asking for help means that you already understand that you don’t have to show that you are perfect all the time. Doing so shows that you are not afraid of people seeing your weaknesses, because you know that success is not only achieved.
6. You realize that life is not a game of chance
And it’s not a seesaw either. Just because someone is hugely successful doesn’t mean you lose at the same rate. It just means you didn’t win that particular time. A sure sign of success is the ability to celebrate the success of others with sincere enthusiasm.
7. You know the difference between being dramatic and being emotional
Remember those days when stable relationships made you lazy and you quickly got tired of anyone treating you the way they should? If that kind of drama is a thing of the past, congratulations! Preferring stability over drama is already succeeding.
8. You no longer care what others think
You only care about other people when you still feel like you have to try something. So if it doesn’t happen to you anymore, you can feel like you’ve made it.
When you are honest with yourself and your principles, you realize that the opinions of others are just that, opinions. They have no effect on reality and they don’t change who you are.
9. You accept what you cannot change and what you can.
There is a big difference between pessimism and practicality. If there is a hurricane approaching there is nothing you can do to stop it, but once you accept that it is getting closer, you start working on how to mitigate its effects.
You will only be able to move forward once you have explored your options. Taking responsibility for changing the things you don’t like in your life is a great indicator of success.
It doesn’t make sense for you to feel like a failure just because you think you should have a better job, a bigger house, or a newer car. True success comes from within and is completely independent of circumstances.
